“You can’t be serious.” Claire mustered the dirtiest look possible for her best friend.

Tiffany held out her hands and air-squeezed the man’s firm rear end from a distance. “C’mon. Look at that ass.”

“Yes, but a Santa Claus? How do I know what he looks like under that suit and beard?”

Imagining removing the white hair to find a wrinkled old man, she shuddered.

“Only one way to find out.” Smacking Claire’s butt, Tiffany urged her forward. “Go ask him.”

She planted her feet. Thank goodness she hadn’t worn heels for their marathon shopping trip two days before Christmas. “If you’re so interested, why don’t you?”

Tiffany rolled her eyes, sighing. “Because I’m engaged to be married to the love of my life. You’re the Grinch who needs to get laid.”

“I’m not a Grinch,” she snapped. Breathing deeply, she counted backwards from ten. “I’m sorry. This is a very stressful time of year for me.”

“I know.” Tiffany cupped her elbow. “I just want to see you happy at Christmas again. It doesn’t have to be a miserable holiday anymore. That’s part of the reason I dragged you with me today.”

She swallowed the lump in her throat, tears welling already. Please don’t let me turn into a blubbering mess in the middle of the mall. While she appreciated her friend’s concern, she coped better on her own. “I…I should go home. I can’t pretend it didn’t happen.”

The One Good Thing

I started reading The One Good Thing, by Kevin Alan Milne, on Saturday. On Sunday, I had planned to watch a movie while my partner was at work, but instead I had to finish the book. From the beginning the tension about keeping secrets is immediately planted and exploited (in a good way) throughout the work.

When Nathan Steen is killed in a freak auto accident, his family must cope not only with his death but also with a secret he harbored from them. Known as a pillar of the community, a memorial Facebook page fills up with eulogies and witness to his good deeds throughout his life. His wife and children are further hurt when they find out his parents knew about the secret and never mentioned it. Even they don't know the full story of Nathan's 'one good thing.'

Anyone and everyone can relate to the characters in this book. Themes of bullying, peer pressure, marital relationships, adult parent-child relationships all unfold as we learn about the secret Nathan harbored since he was a teenager.

For Writers: As a writer myself, I have to mention what I learned by reading this book.

1. POV - KAM uses five different characters' first person points of view to explain the story. What I like is that each character uses each of their limited POV explain and drive the plot. That is so realistic. We all make judgements based on what we see and hear about a situation and sometimes it takes a lot of persuading to get them to think otherwise.

2.  Tension/Reveal of secret - I loved how parts of the secret were revealed early on. For me, it made me want to finish the book quickly to confirm my suspicions. I've tried to do this in some of my own work, so it made me feel good that a successful author like KAM used this technique as well.

What She Wants

For my first review, I have chosen What She Wants, by Sheila Roberts.

What she wants is the story of Jonathan Templar and his poker buddies as they navigate their love lives, each man at a different point in their lives.  Yes, this is a romance, but with a twist:  the entire novel is told from the guys' points of view!  That's right, you're not left wondering, "What was this guy thinking?" because you know exactly what motivates each and everyone of the male characters.  This as a great light read from a different perspective. 

For Writers: 

Because I am also writer, I always read with the intent to learn something from the book I read.  With this book, writers can learn about taking a chance with POV.  Most romance novels are told from the perspective of the heroine.  This entire novel is told from the male characters points of view.  Writers, don't be afraid to try something new and write your story from a different perspective than what is expected for your genre.
