Stealing the Wind by Shira Anthony

Stealing the Wind (Mermen of Ea) is a novel set in the mythical land of Ea. Young Taren is first sold to pay for his master's debts then indentured aboard a ship for a period of three years. While trying to rescue a cabin boy, he is imprisoned as spy. Even though it's scary for him, Taren finds out about his true nature and his birth.

Shira Anthony mixes historical and fantasy in this tale. The world of Ea and its mainland was a great world to get caught up in as Taren is tossed between masters and then finally realizes his destiny in the arms of the man he dreams about. The traditions, religions, and history of the people of Ea are all introduced in this first book of Mermen of Ea series. If you're a writer of this type of genre, it would be great read just to understand how the world is developed.

Taren's journey is a great story as well. Through his indentured servitude, he learns about love. Through his imprisonment, he learns about his true self. He starts to dream of a man, of a soul with whom he is familiar. Will he fall love? You'll have to read for yourself and find out. Hurry, because book two is due out in May.

Love and Salvage: Eli's Three Wishes by Mathew Ortiz

Eli's Three Wishes is the second book in the Love and Salvage series. It is the story of Elijah Gaither and his quest for love just when he thinks he has the rest of his life together. Just as he meets a cute, younger designer, his youngest son comes to live with him. After being caught with another boy at school, his son leaves his ex-wife's house and lands at Eli's house..

Although the story is classified as "Erotica" (and #20 on Amazon as of the time of this writing), I didn't realize it. There's more sex than I normally like to read, but plenty of other plot points going on to make it enjoyable. It's an easy read with easy to relate to characters. I loved the tension between the older man and younger man, and Eli's own tension he thought he would have with his extended redneck family.

The one thing that was a bit weird for me as a reader was the fact that the epilogue launched into new characters and new situations not relevant to Eli or Oscar. In my opinion, it seemed that should be the first chapter in the next novel.

The first novel in the series, Loving Emmett, was about Eli's nephew and the third novel, Halestorm, is about another of Eli's nephews. I read this first, but am excited to read the other two in the series as well.

The author provided me a copy for an honest review.

Interview With Jayson James

Will Green: Tell us about your books that you have available.
PictureClick for Amazon page.
Jayson James: I’ll start with “T.E.D.” my newest release. This book is about three guys Tim, Eric and Delsin, whose lives are intertwined as they each face their own struggles. The story takes place around entries Tim made in his journal while Eric and Delsin provide the back-story of the events taking place.

My other three books chronicle the lives of Derrick Wilson and Justin Parker, two best friends who find out essentially being more than friends was what their lives were missing.

Finding Our Way” is about after one night of drinking and going too far these two friends, Derrick and Justin become aware of their own sexuality.

Tormented Discovery” explores Derrick and Justin being who they are and how others around them handle it.  The readers get to read more about Hayden and get a closer look at his and Ryan’s relationship.

Drifting” focuses on what happens in a relationship when one loves someone but is questioning whether they both are in love anymore.  This time readers get to read from Ryan’s perspective and what is going on in this shy guy’s head.

PictureClick for Amazon page.
Although the books take place chronologically one after another, I wrote each of them as a stand-alone book. My readers started calling the books the “Finding Our Way Series” and the name stuck. After many requests, I released the books together in a series collection.

I also have a few published novellas. “Summer Escape” is about two friends who on a weekend away decide to live by their own rules. I thought it would be a good way for new readers to sample my writing. “Far & Away” is about two guys who meet online, fall in love and realize life is too short to stay apart.

Will Green: What can you tell us about your next project?

Jayson James: After a few failed attempts, I have finally gotten back to writing a book I have titled “Pieces of Us.” When completed, this will be only my second novel to have a title from the beginning of writing it. It is about a guy and girl who are best friends in high school, growing and learning about themselves and others. I’m quite excited about this novel, being it will be different in several ways from my previous published works.

Will Green: Where do you get the information for your book(s)?

Jayson James: Someone once said, “Write what you know.” Although I have never remembered who it was, this is something that has always stuck in my head when it comes to writing something I wanted to share with others. Of course, I have always wanted to write a book where the main character is a killer and have not, which I believe this idea has limited me.

PictureClick for Amazon page.
Will Green: What was the most surprising thing you've learned since you started writing?

Jayson James: That there are people out there that enjoy my writing. I was the most surprised at how five of my closest friends love reading what I have written. Also with writing, there is always room to grow. I am always amazed at how much I improve the more I write.

Will Green: How long does it take you to write a book?

Jayson James: Three to six months on average.

Will Green: Who or What inspires you to write?

Jayson James: Friends, family and living life.

Will Green: What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Jayson James: I have to have either the right movie or music playing in the background. There have been times when I am trying to write something and the mood of the noise around me has not been right. I’ve forced it and then been quite disappointed with the outcome.

PictureClick for Amazon page.
Will Green: What book are you reading right now?

Jayson James: “Wide Asleep” by Nick Nolan. He sent me an advanced copy of his book, which is something no one has ever done before. I am still excited about it. Due to some eye problems, I have not been able to read it as much as I like. From what I have read so far, once again Nick has another hit with me. My Kindle always has a few books that I am planning on reading, such as “Game of Thrones,” which I made it through the first three books and have had the last two waiting for me to take the time to read them.

Will Green: Who is your favorite author and why?

Jayson James: This has always been a tough question for me. I suppose it depends on my mood. So let me name a few that come to mind. Nick Nolan writes realistic characters and has such a depth in his stories. He is one of the smartest people I have ever met, yet down-to-earth and real. He writes about people that I feel either as if I know or I want to know or even be. Jay Bell also writes some great characters that I always find myself adoring. His books always grab ahold of me and make me cry several times throughout reading them. James Patterson, especially his Alex Cross Series I have always enjoyed. His chapters are so short, I always get a feeling of accomplishment as I read and every time I think I’m growing tired of his work, he puts out something that grabs me right back in. Stephen King I have to mention as well. Over the last few years, I have read through some of his “bigger” books in a small amount of time and have truly enjoyed them. He goes into too much detail at times for me, but he typically has a way of keeping me reading and turning the pages.

Will Green: What kind of music do you listen to and why?

Jayson James: I like a variety of music ranging from modern, musicals and 80’s. Pretty much anything upbeat is what I am drawn towards, especially if it is something I can sing along with. Sometimes I will listen to the same song over and over again. When I’m writing I often have a playlist of 10-12 songs I will listen to through the duration of the writing project. Other times I will hear a song that invokes emotion in me and helps keep me in a particular state of mind.

Will Green: What do you watch on TV and why?

Jayson James: I generally watch TV twice a week, being I do not like to have it take up what I already feel is a limited amount of time. Some shows I that I enjoy watching are “The Walking Dead” and “Shameless”, both being they are entertaining and I can find myself relating or thinking about what I would do if I were in the situations they find themselves in.

Will Green: What kind of advice could you give an aspiring writer?

Jayson James: Do it! Find people who will support you and be honest with you. Be willing to take constructive criticism and grow from it. Do not get discouraged. Those who support and like your writing, value these relationships.

And be sure to connect with Jayson James.

The Red Sheet - Mia Kerick

Description:
One October morning, high school junior Bryan Dennison wakes up a different person—helpful, generous, and chivalrous—a person whose new admirable qualities he doesn’t recognize. Stranger still is the urge to tie a red sheet around his neck like a cape.
Bryan soon realizes this compulsion to wear a red cape is accompanied by more unusual behavior. He can’t hold back from retrieving kittens from tall trees, helping little old ladies cross busy streets, and defending innocence anywhere he finds it.
Shockingly, at school, he realizes he used to be a bully. He’s attracted to the former victim of his bullying, Scott Beckett, though he has no memory of Scott from before “the change.” Where he’d been lazy in academics, overly aggressive in sports, and socially insecure, he’s a new person. And although he can recall behaving egotistically, he cannot remember his motivations.
Everyone, from his mother to his teachers to his “superjock” former pals, is shocked by his dramatic transformation. However, Scott Beckett is not impressed by Bryan’s newfound virtue. And convincing Scott he’s genuinely changed and improved, hopefully gaining Scott’s trust and maybe even his love, becomes Bryan’s obsession.
With a foreword by C. Kennedy

Excerpt:
I’m not gonna shit you on this next part either, ’cause this is my story, which is all about calling a spade a spade. You may not get my reasons, and I’m not asking you to. But just keep an open mind, hear this story out, and we can try to make sense of it later.
So, anyways, once I held that little pillowcase tight in my hands—I knew exactly what I was gonna do with it, and I didn’t hesitate for a second in getting it done. I tucked one end of the material into the neck of my Appleton High School baseball hoodie, so that it lay down the length of my back right over my hood. Then, timing it right with the traffic flow, I stepped up onto the wall, raised my arms like you-know-who would do… and yeah, I took a great big leap.
“Up, up, and away” is not how I’d describe what happened next. Instead, I dropped right down on the brownish fall grass like a lead balloon. Landed on both feet, twisted the left ankle pretty good, and my palms broke the rest of the fall. Thankfully, my chin was the only part of my face that hit the dirt. Teeth: intact.
For a couple of minutes I lay there, trying to make sense of what had just happened. And I’m gonna just put what I came up with out there for you, so get ready.
I felt like Superman.
After all, I’d jumped because I’d been testing a theory that I actually was Superman incarnate in the form of an Appleton High School junior. (Save your commentary for a more appropriate time.)
So, I thought back to my childhood and my limited knowledge of this particular superhero that came from a few current movies, a rerun or two of the oldies on late-night TV, and a couple of comics I’d pulled out of my Christmas stockings. Growing up, I was really much more into sports—LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal—these guys had been my heroes. But, as I lay on the ground, maybe rolling around and moaning a bit in pain and clutching my twisted ankle, I tried to recall everything I knew about Superman.
I wasn’t exactly sure where he got his power, but I was pretty sure he had superhuman strength. And I remembered that he was invulnerable to harm and a very fast healer. I couldn’t check the box next to “fast healer” as a way in which I was similar to Superman, because I’d gotten hurt in my eight-foot leap, and my ankle seemed to be getting worse by the second, not better.
Superhuman speed. Nope, I couldn’t check that box either, seeing as I had been late for school yesterday, and it looked like I was gonna be late again today. And then there were Superman’s senses. Didn’t he have X-ray vision? He could see through solid objects, right? So I looked up to see if my backpack was still resting on the ground beside the sidewalk, on the other side of the stone wall, but all I could see was stone wall. And shouldn’t I have been able to smell the delicious egg scramble omelet with my name on it that was waiting for me in the school cafeteria? I mean, I surely would have been able to, if I had Superman’s enhanced sense of smell, right? And shouldn’t I be able to hear the late bell ringing, right about now, for that matter, from exactly where I was—one block from the school? But I only smelled the scent of the rotting fall leaves that surrounded me and heard just the sporadic rush of traffic on the street above.
And then there was the whole flying thing. The phrases “it’s a bird, it’s a plane” and “able to leap tall buildings” were ingrained in my mind as descriptive of Superman. Not so much for Bryan Dennison, though, even with the red (pillowcase) cape streaming behind him.
What it seemed to come down to was that I felt like Superman, but I wasn’t Superman. No strange other-planet-like chemical reaction had occurred in my bloodstream on Sunday night while I’d slept to cause a magical physical change to occur in me that had created superpowers. No, the only change that had occurred was in my head. I had somehow developed a compelling urge to protect the innocent. It was as if I suddenly knew, or maybe I suddenly cared about, the difference between right and wrong, whereas I clearly hadn’t before. And I was willing to act on my new convictions.
I tried to push myself up off the ground, but my arms shook—too weak from the fall. So, getting back to the superhuman-strength thing I mentioned before, it definitely wasn’t happening here. So I couldn’t check that box either.
It looked like I was merely Superman of Intention. I had limits.
And so, as I accomplished what it was I knew I had to accomplish in the town of Appleton, or, in other words, as I protected the innocent in this small community I had somehow become responsible for, I would need to work within these limits: no superhuman strength or speed or senses, no flying or fast-healing abilities. (As a matter of fact, I might very well need to see the school nurse about an Ace bandage as soon as I got to school.) All I had to work with was just regular old Bryan Dennison—a man with a
new motivation, a deep uncertainty as to how I’d acquired this new motivation, some major memory lapses when it came to Scott Beckett, a group of very athletic and very arrogant friends, a twisted ankle, and a new set of red sheets.
Wish me luck.
I think I’m gonna need it.

Guest Post:

Hi, thank you for inviting me over to your blog.

Why are we as a society so obsessed by superheroes?

In my opinion, the reason our society is obsessed by the concept of the superhero is simple and can be summed up in one word: hope. The superhero offers us unquestionable, even incomprehensible, hope in the form of someone we can relate to in our everyday lives.

While writing The Red Sheet, I became aware of the abundance of YA novels that dealt with the superhero concept, and specifically, that there are more than a few YA LGBTQ novels that are devoted to this very theme. This fact did not deter my desire to put forth my take on a teenaged superhero story. Why not, you may wonder. Isn’t the whole superman thing a “been there, done that” kind of topic? But where there is an extremely difficult and pervasive societal problem, such as teenaged bullying, there is also a desire in many for the existence of a force to counter that problem. To police our lives, in a sense. To make things right where an innocent has been wronged. And thus, the need for a superhero story.

Bryan Dennison is an unlikely superhero, as he crossed over from “the other side”; he actually rather mystically morphed overnight from the arch villain into the ultimate good guy. As such, he is a character we can all relate to in both forms.  And in his “good guy” form, we can relate to his struggles as a human being, while simultaneously recognizing his superhero-like calling to police society, with no other agenda than to do what is right.

Bryan deals with issues relevant to teens, such as respecting parents and teachers, dealing with others honestly, behaving fairly in sports, and assisting those less fortunate. And yes, he must face The Red Sheets’ big issue: bullying at the high school level, both in and out of the school building. In this case, the specific issue Bryan must address is the bullying of a fellow high school junior, Scott Beckett, who he also happens to be in love with.

And in case you are wondering, the “red sheet” in question is symbolic of Bryan’s overwhelming urge to tie a red sheet around his neck and wear it like a Superman cape…

Find out how Bryan counters high school bullying.

IN GOOD COMPANY!! Other super hero YA LGBTQ novels I came across in a very brief search:

About the Author:
Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.
Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.
Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.
My themes I always write about:
Sweetness. Unconventional love, tortured/damaged heroes- only love can save them.

You Can See Me by AE Via

I am so excited to host AE Via today after the release of her latest novel, You Can See Me.

Synopsis:
World renowned chef Prescott Vaughan was at the height of his career. Right before he's to leave for Paris to work alongside his idol, a horrific car accident leaves him completely blind.
His female fiancé leaves him in a state of desperation and depression.  He pines for love, companionship, and so happens to find it in the form of his very sexy neighbor.  Sexy male neighbor, Dr. Rickson 'Ric' Edwards.
Prescott's not gay - at least he never considered himself gay - until Ric saves him from a date, gone terribly wrong. The two neighbors hit it off quickly and waste no time exploring and learning each other.  Things are great until Ric begins to have his doubts about meeting Prescott's many wants.
When Ric insist he and Prescott take a breather, Pres finds himself lonely and lacking again. Enter, male escort and aspiring chef, Blair McKenzie to fill the void.
In the meantime, Ric works on his issues that prohibits him from displaying the love he knows he has for Prescott. When Ric is finally ready and returns to claim Prescott he's not sure that Pres can let go of the sexy, southern, hotness that is Blair McKenzie. After Ric has his own personal encounter with the sinfully sexy man, he can't help but become entranced and crave more as well.
Pres soon realizes that there's no need to choose between his two men, because when all three of them finally come together - grab a cold drink - the heat is going to go all the way up!
This is not your typical gay ménage romance. Everyone is not happy, skipping along, and loving life. These men are at each other’s throats. They live completely separate lives; fuss, cuss, and fight until they all realize exactly what the problem is...too damn much sexual tension.

Excerpt:
Ric leaned his head back against the elevator paneling and watched the numbers light up all the way to floor ten before his eyes drifted shut for the rest of the way. When the doors opened, he came face-to-face with Prescott’s Texan.
Fuck me.
Instead of the gorgeous prick getting on the elevator and leaving, the cocky bastard took a couple steps back and leaned against the wall on the opposite side of the hallway and stared openly at him as if he hadn’t a care in the world. His hazel eyes scanned Ric up and down, taking in his disheveled, stressed-out appearance.
“Do you have a fucking problem?” Ric growled, refusing to pretend to be cordial to the man even though he was a complete stranger and had done absolutely nothing to him.
The man had the nerve to smirk at him and shake his head as if pitying Ric, or perhaps throwing it in Ric’s face that he’d definitely had a better night than he had. Ric did try to hide his anger at knowing the man had slept with his Pres. Why the hell else would he be leaving at five in the damn morning? Unless he delivered newspapers or milk, he had absolutely no reason to be on this floor this time of morning. Bastard.
“No, I don’t have a problem,” he drawled slowly, making sure to put extra enunciation on the “I” part of his sentence. “But, obviously, you do. Or else you wouldn’t be scowling at me for no reason.”
“Fuck you,” Ric snarled, stepping just a little closer. He wanted to tear the man’s lips off for talking with that accent. Then he wanted to rip his hands off for daring to touch his Prescott. The man’s probably a male gold digger.
“Did you enjoy taking advantage of Prescott? Did you get what you came for?” Ric growled like a rabid animal three inches away from the man’s face, but he’d be damned if the asshole didn’t even flinch at his showcase of fury. No reaction whatsoever.
The Texan had one hand casually tucked in his jeans pocket, kicking back one side of his stylish blazer, while he lazily rubbed his other hand over his taut chest and washboard abs that showed through the thin material of his untucked dress shirt. Ric hated to admit it, but the man looked well fucked, and he wore it well.
“How could you do that to someone like him?” Ric fumed, and it took everything in him to control his rage.
If I hit him, no one would know. There’s no one around, no witnesses. It’d be his word against mine.
“I knew I’d peg you in less than five minutes.” The man spoke with one dark brown eyebrow cocked up. He ran his fingers through his bed-tousled dark brown hair and let out an exasperated breath.
“Excuse me?” Ric blinked.
“Now I know why you were too stupid to hold on to Prescott Vaughan. You were too busy feeling sorry for him. Instead of you seeing a brilliant man, a world-renowned, accomplished chef who happens to be one of the most talented men to ever set foot in a kitchen, you see a needy, helpless man. Ahhh. Now it makes perfect sense.”
“Don’t try to act like you know me because you don’t,” Ric growled, still trying to be mindful they were in the hallway of the floor that he lived on.
The Texan pushed off the wall and closed the few inches between them. His six feet, two inches of height had him eye to eye with Ric, and the man showed no fear. His handsome face was now a mask of furious anger.
“I saw you treat him like shit on the bottom of your shoes last night. I watched him beg you for five fuckin’ minutes of your time, and you spat in his face. Now, you have the audacity to say I’m mistreating him? Fuck you,” he snarled right back at Ric.
Just as fast as the man’s anger came, it disappeared, and he composed himself to reveal that smirk that Ric selfishly rejoiced Pres couldn’t see, because it was sexy as fuck…and the man knew it.
Ric watched his competition push the elevator button as he rubbed his hand over his morning stubble before speaking again. “You know what they say, don’t you, Doc? One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and Prescott Vaughan is definitely a rare, precious treasure.”
The Texan inched in even closer, which surprised the hell out of Ric since they were practically nose to nose. Ric was smacked in the face with a faint soap-and-water fragrance that made his eyelids flutter and his own dick jerk to life. Ric’s half-lidded eyes were riveted to the Texan’s plush lips as he leaned in and whispered directly into Ric’s open mouth.
“If you don’t pull your head out of your ass and claim Prescott Vaughan like he wants, I won’t stop until I’ve fucked the sexy strawberry ten ways to Sunday and there’s not a single trace of your existence left in his mind, because with or without you, he needs love, and I was the one there last night to lick his sweet tears when you walked away.”
The elevator doors opened at his final words, and the smooth Texan took a few graceful steps backward into the elevator and gave Ric a sexy wink right before the doors closed.
Fucking asshole, Ric thought.

Excerpt
“What’s going on here? Where the hell are my pants?”
Elizabeth practically jumped out of her skin. Steve stood in the bedroom doorway, wearing only some tight fitting pink sweats.
“I found you after your car went nose to nose with a tree.” She crossed her arms. “The question is, what were you doing up here in a snowstorm? Were you coming up here to spy on me?”
“Jesus, my head hurts.” Steve groaned and sat at the kitchen table. “And don’t flatter yourself.” He brought up his hands to rub his eyes and push on his temples. He started to say something when a giggle and a round of undistinguishable sounds caught his attention. Steve stared at the little girl, a whisper of a smile on his pale face. “You have a daughter?”
She chose to ignore the question. “Again, Mr. York, you were headed…where?”
“I was going to see some friends in Granby, then on to Steamboat to spend the holidays with my family.”
“You figured on taking a short cut on Badger Springs Road?”
“Basically,” he muttered. “I had a phone in my pants pocket…” Steve looked down at the pink sweats. “Yours, I presume?” At her nod, he asked with a smirk, “And you’re the one that took my clothes off?”
      “Junior, my neighbor.”
“If you’ll allow me to use your phone, I’ll call Triple A and get myself and my car out of your life.” He reached over to Katy and she latched onto his finger, the brightest smile ever illuminating her sweet face.
Elizabeth quickly picked her up, as if he would contaminate her by his touch.  “Phones are out.”
      “Internet?”
      “Nope.”
“How the hell do you live here?” he asked irritably.
